Chiropractic is the science, philosophy and art of healing that deals with the body in a natural non-invasive and powerful way.
Doctors of chiropractic or chiropractic physicians are specialists in the bio-mechanical, (the biological, chemical and mechanical functioning of the body), the musculo-skeletal (the relationship between the muscles, bones, joints and related structures) and the nervous system. In other words you could say they are biomechanical musculo-skeletal and nervous system engineers. Said more simply chiropractors work with structure and function.
Chiropractic adjusting removes
interference of the nervous system. Chiropractors correct
malpositioning and misalignment
of the joints of the spine and
extremities (also called
subluxations) to remove
interference of the nervous system.
Subluxations cause imbalances that effect the
overall function of the nervous system resulting in pain, muscle spasm,
headaches, difficulty with some movements, alterations in organ
function, loss
of function and even changes to the overall structures of the body.
Dr. Taylor
uses a holistic approach. She uses gentle chiropractic techniques which
are powerful and effective for adults, children and infants.
Training
Chiropractors take advanced degree work in a college of chiropractic. Their studies include approximately four years of rigorous graduate level academic study plus over 600 clinical hours and an optional 600 hours in a Preceptorship, a form of internship working in a chiropractic office.
In most states chiropractors sit for 4 or 5 National Board Exams, one of which is for Physical Therapy. This is in addition to their states requirements which may be a four year degree in addition to a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree. Chiropractors may also have advanced training in a variety of areas including acupuncture and clinical nutrition.

Why Chiropractic Care?
Structural correction of bony misalignment (mal-positioning) relieves pressure on the nervous system. This is when a joint that has moved from it normal position to a position that interferes with the functioning of the nervous system. It may be related to muscular imbalance, an injury, stress, or even from old injuries perhaps considered insignificant when they occurred. This includes birth, falls from roller skates as a child, etc. Adjustments, or chiropractic corrections effect posture, balance, organs, the flow of spinal fluid and nervous system and the healthy functioning of the body.
When structural imbalance and the functioning of the nervous system is noted to be compromised Dr. Taylor will apply a specific, gentle adjustment to correct the structural and/or function related issue.
Healing is a Process
Chiropractic adjustments can correct the mal-positioning and restore nerve transmission. Muscle spasms, chronic conditions, work and sleeping habits, posture, inflammation, injury, stress, hormonal imbalance, disease processes, nutritional related issues all can affect the ability of the body to hold the adjustment. In the beginning your chiropractic physician may recommend several visits to support your body in the healing process.
A Holistic Approach to Your Health Care Goals
Recommendations for the number and type of healing treatments vary from patient to patient. You will be given an examination and report of findings to discuss your personalized care plan based on the recommendations of the doctor and your own health care goals. Your chiropractor may recommend other natural therapies to support your healing. Your chiropractor’s recommendations along with your level of commitment and how well you are able to comply with the recommendations will influence how quickly you move through the phases of your healing.
About the Nervous System
The nervous system controls the functions of the tissues, organs and all the system of the body. The spinal cord is the main trunk of the nervous system and is protected by the bones of the spine which is made up of 24 segments. This is the main structural support for the body. A healthy spine keeps the body erect and protects the billions of nerves that pass to and from the brain by way of the spinal cord . These nerves pass through small openings between the bones of the spine, also called the vertebrae to carry electrical nerve impulses to every part of your body, to keep you healthy, fully functioning and allow you to move the joints of your body freely.
Chiropractic concerns itself with the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (primarily coordinated by the nervous system) of the human body, and how that relationship affects the restoration and preservation of health.
Acute Care and Corrective Care
These are the first phases of the healing process; for some people the goal is simply relief from pain or prevention of its reoccurrence. Chronic issues may have acute flare-ups and may respond well to a schedule of corrective care.

Maintenance and Wellness Care
Day-by-day physical, mental and chemical stresses may lead to spinal mis-alignments. Therefore, periodic chiropractic checkups are as important to your health just as regular medical and dental checkups. How often you have your next chiropractic visit depends on your general health and life style. Your doctor of chiropractic will recommend the best program for your needs.
